Custom Exterior Sign Options for Chicago Businesses

Illuminated Channel Letter Signs

Custom front-lit, halo-lit and combination-lit channel letters provide clear visibility during the day and after dark. Letter shape, depth, face color, returns, trim caps and mounting method can be adapted to your logo and storefront.

LED Storefront Signs

Energy-efficient LED lighting can be incorporated into channel letters, cabinet signs and illuminated logo signs. We plan the lighting, power supply, mounting and service access as part of the complete exterior sign system.

Cabinet and Lightbox Signs

Illuminated sign cabinets are a practical choice for retail stores, restaurants and service businesses that need a large, highly visible sign face. New cabinets can be fabricated from scratch, while suitable existing cabinets may be refaced or converted to LED lighting.

Dimensional Letters and Logos

Non-illuminated dimensional letters create a clean, professional appearance for offices, clinics, salons, retail locations and commercial buildings. Available materials may include acrylic, aluminum, PVC and other exterior-rated substrates.

Blade and Projecting Signs

Blade signs project outward from the building, making the business easier to identify for pedestrians and drivers approaching from either direction. They are especially useful on busy commercial streets and multi-tenant storefronts.

Awning Signs

Custom awnings combine storefront identification with practical protection around entrances and windows. Graphics, lettering and colors can be coordinated with the primary exterior sign.

Monument and Pylon Signs

Freestanding monument and pylon signs improve visibility for shopping centers, standalone businesses and commercial properties located farther from the road.

Storefront Window Graphics

Window lettering, logo graphics, business hours, promotional displays and perforated window film can extend your storefront branding across the glass.

Storefront design

Storefront Design and Custom Logo Sign Development

A successful storefront design should work with the architecture of the building, remain visible from the direction customers approach and represent the business consistently during the day and after dark.

Before recommending a sign type, we review the facade, available mounting space, viewing distance, neighboring signs, electrical access and any existing sign structures.

If you already have a logo, we adapt it for exterior sign fabrication while preserving its proportions, colors and visual identity. When the original artwork is not production-ready, we can recreate it as scalable vector artwork.

Before fabrication begins, you receive a digital storefront mockup showing the proposed sign on a photograph of your actual building. This allows you to compare size, placement, colors, materials and lighting options before approving the final design.

How to Choose the Right Storefront Sign

Channel Letters

Best for retailers, restaurants and service businesses that need strong day-and-night visibility. Available with front-lit, halo-lit or combination illumination.

Cabinet and Lightbox Signs

Best for locations that need a large illuminated sign face, multiple lines of information or an economical replacement for an existing sign cabinet.

Dimensional Letters

Best for offices, clinics, salons and professional businesses that want a clean, non-illuminated exterior identity.

Blade Signs

Best for pedestrian-oriented streets and storefronts that are difficult to see when approaching parallel to the building.

Window Graphics

Best for extending the storefront design across the glass with logos, services, business hours, privacy graphics or promotional messaging.

Updates & retrofits

Sign Refacing, LED Conversion and Storefront Updates

A complete replacement is not always necessary. If an existing sign cabinet, raceway or mounting structure is still in suitable condition, it may be possible to update the storefront at a lower cost.

Depending on the condition of the existing sign, we can replace sign faces, update graphics, repaint components, install new acrylic or polycarbonate panels and convert older fluorescent lighting to outdoor-rated LED modules.

We inspect the existing structure before recommending a reface or lighting conversion. If repair would not provide a reliable result, we will explain why a new sign is the better option.

Materials

Exterior Sign Materials for Chicago Weather

Exterior business signs in Chicagoland must tolerate temperature changes, moisture, wind, UV exposure and winter conditions.

Depending on the sign type, we use aluminum cabinets and returns, acrylic or polycarbonate faces, exterior-grade vinyl, durable paints, sealed electrical components and LED modules rated for outdoor use.

Material selection depends on the sign size, mounting height, illumination, expected service life and whether the sign is exposed to direct weather.

Permits

Storefront Sign Permits in Chicago and the Suburbs

Exterior sign requirements vary between Chicago and surrounding municipalities. Sign dimensions, projection, illumination, mounting method, zoning and property type may affect what documentation is required.

Green Line Signs can prepare sign drawings and technical details, submit the permit application, respond to requested revisions and coordinate required inspections.

Permit review should begin before fabrication so the approved sign matches the sign that is ultimately produced and installed.

Pricing factors

What Affects the Cost of a Storefront Sign?

The cost of a custom storefront sign depends on its dimensions, materials, illumination, letter depth, mounting system, installation height, electrical requirements and permit process.

Refacing an existing cabinet may cost less than manufacturing a new sign. Flat dimensional letters are usually simpler than individually fabricated illuminated letters, while high-mounted signs may require additional installation equipment.

FAQ

Storefront Sign FAQs

What types of storefront signs do you make?
We fabricate and install channel letters, lightboxes, dimensional letters, blade signs, awning signs, monument signs, pylon signs, and storefront window graphics.
Can you design a storefront sign from my existing logo?
Yes. We can adapt your logo into a sign-ready design, choosing the right materials, lighting, and mounting to match your brand and building.
What is the best exterior sign for a retail store?
It depends on your location and visibility. Channel letters and illuminated cabinets are the most popular retail choices because they stand out day and night.
Do you make illuminated and LED storefront signs?
Yes. We build front-lit, halo-lit, and combination-lit channel letters, plus LED lightboxes and illuminated logo signs.
Can you reface or relight an existing sign cabinet?
Often yes — if the cabinet is structurally sound, we can replace the face and convert the lighting to LED for a fraction of the cost of a new sign.
Do you handle storefront sign permits?
Yes. We prepare drawings, submit applications, and coordinate inspections with the local village or city.
How long does a custom storefront sign take?
Most projects take 2–4 weeks from approved design to installation, depending on permitting, fabrication, and scheduling.
Can you install window graphics with the main storefront sign?
Yes. We can design, produce, and install window lettering, perforated film, and promotional graphics as part of the same project.
What materials are used for exterior business signs?
We use aluminum, acrylic, polycarbonate, PVC, and other exterior-rated substrates built to handle Chicago weather year-round.
Do you install storefront signs throughout the Chicago suburbs?
Yes. We serve Chicago and the surrounding suburbs with in-house fabrication and our own install crews.
